TEF - Test d'Evaluation du Français (French Proficiency Test)

For those seeking to evaluate their level in French, we strongly recommend the TEF test (Test d’Evaluation de Français) run by the Paris Chamber of Commerce

  • this is a reliable test that measures candidates’ proficiency in French with a multiple choice questionnaire focussing on comprehension and expression skills.

  • no previous certificate or qualification is required to take the TEF, however candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have attended at least 100 hours of French courses.

  • the TEF consists of one compulsory section and 2 optional ones, which cost 70€ each.

TCF - Test de Connaissance du Français (French Competency Test)

The TCF is the French examination approved by the French Ministry of National Education. It is designed by the CIEP educational centre, which has been a member of ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) since May 2002. The TCF is therefore the reference test for the French language, alongside the Cambridge IELTS and the German Daf test.

  • TCF assesses candidates' level in French for general purposes. It is intended for people who are not native French speakers who, for professional, personal or academic reasons, want to have their competency in French assessed and certified simply, reliably and quickly.

  • It is made up of 3 compulsory sections and two further sections. Candidates’ test scores enable them to be reliably positioned on a 6-level scale as defined by the Council of Europe.

  • Each candidate is given a certificate which presents the following information:

    - on the front: the name of the centre where the test was taken and the date, the name and surname of the candidate, the code of the candidate and general information such as date of birth, nationality, place of birth, mother tongue(s). The candidate’s test result is also given as an overall score and an overall level, then detailed scores and levels per skill and scores for any further test sections taken.

    - on the back: the scale of levels and how tests scores are interpreted, detailed scales for each skill. Levels are expressed in terms of skills or capability (“The candidate can …”), so that end users of the certificate (employers or education authorities) can easily understand what the holder can do – understand or express - in French.
