A Brief History of Bordeaux
Part
2: Celtic Bordeaux
In the third century BC, a Celtic tribe from the North
of France, the Bituriges Vivisci, settled on the outer
bank of a broad bend of the tidal Garonne River.
With
the river’s crescent-shaped “Port of the Moon” opening
to the Gironde Estuary, this settlement was always destined for trade. Called
Burdigala, which is probably of Aquitainian origin, the settlement was a key
stop on the tin trade route. It is from these humble beginnings that the prosperous
port and city of Bordeaux developed, a city built on trade.
